A man has been sentenced to four years in prison after a loaded sawn off shot gun was found in a car in Luton.

Robert Barton, 27, of Eldon Road, Luton, was sentenced at Luton Crown Court on Friday (23 February) after pleading guilty to conspiracy to transfer a prohibited firearm and possession of ammunition without a certificate. He was sentenced to four years for the firearms offence, and 18 months which he will serve concurrently for the ammunition offence.

In June 2016, armed officers stopped three men travelling in cars in Luton after receiving intelligence to suggest that the vehicles may have been used to store firearms.

A loaded sawn off shot gun and three bullets were found in one of the cars and Barton and two other men, Mohammed Parvaiz Khan, 32, of St Ethelbert Avenue, and Changiz Khan, 38, of Crozley View, Watford, were subsequently arrested and charged.

Mohammed Khan and Changiz Khan were sentenced in January to eight years and three months, and five years respectively, with Barton's sentence bringing the trio’s total jail time to 17 years and three months.

Detective Inspector Aaron Kiff, from Bedfordshire Police’s Boson team, which tackles gun and gang crime, said: “We’re dedicated to tackling firearms criminality and we’re pleased that these offenders, as well as another dangerous weapon, have been taken off the streets of our county.

“The possession of a illicit firearm, regardless of whether it has been used, is an offence and the consequences are severe. I hope this sends a strong lesson to those who think it’s acceptable to carry a gun that we will find you and you will be prosecuted.”

If anyone is concerned about illegal activity in their neighbourhood please report it to police on 101. You can also give information online via the Bedfordshire Police website, or call Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
