Force celebrates its own Oscars

Everyone will be caught up in Oscars fever this weekend, as the great and good from Hollywood gather to celebrate the best the film industry has had to offer over the past 12 months.

Far away from the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, Bedfordshire Police’s very own Oscars will be performing a very different but nonetheless crucial role as the eyes and ears of our force across the county.

Oscar 1 and Oscar 2 are the call signs given to the two people charged with overseeing the team in our force contact centre.

When major incidents are called into us, Bedfordshire Police’s Oscars spring into action and coordinate our response.

They take a key role in everything from vehicle pursuits and major incidents, through to sign posting those who contact us to other services who can provide them with support. Every Oscar will tell you no day in the contact centre is ever the same.

The Oscars can coordinate the latest digital information we have; keep up to date with officers at the scene, as well as liaising with different specialists and departments.

Given the variety of incidents dealt with and the levels of vulnerability the force deals with on a daily basis, they help co-ordinate the force's response in dealing with these incidents in the most appropriate way.  We are very lucky to have such a talented and experienced team to call upon as our Oscars.

While we may not have the glitz and glamour of those award winning movie stars, I believe our job is even more important.
