About the Special Constabulary

Citizens in Policing log

We place great emphasis on fighting crime  “together’’ and the force’s volunteer police officers, also known as Special Constables, work shoulder to shoulder with full-time police officers and PCSOs.

Our specials work out of rural police stations, help with the busy night-time economy in our bustling towns and even work on   specialist teams like our dedicated Football Unit.

They are very much on the ‘front line’, making arrests, fighting   crime and protecting the public. Many seize training opportunities   and move into specialist areas like the Roads Policing Unit, Dog   Handling, Football Unit and Airport Unit.

Joining the Special Constabulary is an opportunity to contribute something to the community and a chance to make friends and learn new skills, like leadership and negotiating, which are directly transferrable to the workplace.

To apply for the Special Constabulary, you must be 18 years old and a British Citizen, an EC/EEA National or Commonwealth Citizen or a Foreign National with no restrictions to live & work in the UK.  Find out more about eligibility.

If you’d like to come along to one of our information evenings to find out more about becoming a Special Constable, see our list of events.
