Diversity and Inclusion

Welcome to the Diversity and Inclusion section of Bedfordshire Police. Our core purpose is to ‘fight crime and protect the public’. We achieve our purpose by providing a professional policing service that respects the diversity of everyone we serve and employ.

Our service delivery, business strategies, policies, corporate behaviour and our relationships with the individuals and communities we serve all support our approach to diversity, inclusivity and equality values. Our commitment ensures that we will support our employees to reach their full potential, and in so doing, maximise community engagement, involvement and increased public confidence.

The demographics of the workplace are changing rapidly. Organisations now have a much broader diversity of staff at all levels. The diversity of Bedfordshire Police employees ensures the Force brings a unique perspective to the policing challenges we face.

Bedfordshire Police has a moral and legislative obligation to check the work we do does not impact adversely on our communities, particularly with respect to race, religious belief/non-belief, disability, sex, age and sexual orientation. Our aim is to put individuals and our communities at the heart of policing. Our Equality Standard Framework sets out our moral and legal responsibilities, which in turn will allow us to deliver meaningful change.

Bedfordshire Police also utilises the services of members of the community through the Bedfordshire Independent Advisory Group (IAG). If you would like to know more about the role of the IAG and how to become a member visit the IAG internet pages.

Internally we use strong and active staff support networks to enable the workforce to engage easily on matters of equality, diversity and inclusion. We also have internal volunteers who act as diversity champions through the organisation.

At Bedfordshire Police we eliminate unlawful discrimination, advance equality of opportunity and foster good relations between people from different communities and backgrounds. Doing this helps us to deliver our purpose: ‘to fight crime and protect the public’.
