Stepping Out Safely Winners!
School children from lower schools in Houghton Regis have been working on building their road safety skills by entering a colouring competition.
Youngsters entered a colouring competition to highlight the importance of putting road safety first.
PCSO David Dodkins, PCSO Christaki Peklivanas and PCSO Sophie Ager of the Houghton Regis-based Safer Neighbourhood Team, visited lower school assemblies to educate the children about personal and road safety and to launch the competition.
More than 80 children joined in and PCSO David Dodkins thanked the youngsters for their enthusiasm during special assemblies throughout the week. A special goody bag was given to the winner from each school, prizes were donated by Halfords, Sainsbury and Tesco. The winning pictures will be on display at Houghton Regis Police Station.
Stepping Out is part of a road safety initiative to provide children aged from 4 to 8 years old with road safety skills to keep them safe.
PCSO Dodkins, said:”Children need to learn how to stay safe whilst they are out and about. As they start school, there will be more occasions when they are alone. The children enjoyed learning about their own safety when it comes to dealing with strangers and other awkward situations and when they are on the road as pedestrians or passengers in cars or school buses.
“The children loved the idea of an art competition and it is a great way to get the children involved.”
