Yarlswood Update

Bedfordshire Police detained four women for offences under Section 51 of the Immigration Act last night following a minor disturbance at Yarlswood Immigration Detention Centre.

They were taken to Greyfriars Police Station in Bedford at around 7.30pm. They will be handed over to the UK Border Agency later today. They have not been arrested or charged with any criminal offences.

Security and control inside the compound remained with SERCO, who run the facility on behalf of the Home Office, throughout the incident and the remaining detainees were dealt with on site by resident staff.

Bedfordshire Police, who had been on hand at the perimeter fence of the compound, if required, were stood down at 7.50pm having had no further involvement.

Local residents’ representatives have been kept in informed by Safer Neighbourhood Team officers throughout the incident.
