Leighton Woman Gets Three Year ASBO

A WOMAN regularly found drunk in areas of Leighton has today (Tuesday, November 17) received an Anti-Social Behaviour Order (ASBO).

Kathleen McCarthy, born 5/6/56, of Vimy Road, Leighton Buzzard, was given an order by Luton Magistrates Court that will run for three years.

The court heard McCarthy consumes large amounts of alcohol and is regularly found in locations within Leighton Buzzard and Leighton Linslade, including children’s play areas.

When intoxicated she uses foul language to those who try to assist her, often within the earshot of children, and is sometimes in a state of “extreme undress”.

The three conditions of her ASBO are that she does not:

  • Consume alcohol in any public place or be in possession of alcohol in an unsealed vessel in a public place
  • Enter any on or off-licensed premises to purchase alcohol in either Leighton Buzzard or Leighton Linslade
  • Enter the town centre, except to visit her legal representatives, or the Parsons Close park area (map attached)

After the hearing Leighton Buzzard Safer Neighbourhood Sergeant, Chris Bull, said: “My responsibility is to ensure the town is free from this type of behaviour and I am pleased the court has supported our application, which was taken after a great deal of time, thought and effort.

“Our greatest wish is that the order will help Kathleen McCarthy take stock of her life. However, posters highlighting her ASBO will be placed in the town centre area and anyone who sees the defendant in breach is asked not to approach her, but to instead contact police.”

Barry Wardle, of Leighton-Linslade Town Council, welcomed the action adding: “The Town Council fully supports and actively works with the police to ensure that the town remains as safe, pleasant and incident free environment for all residents.”

Anyone who sees someone in breach of their ASBO can contact police, in confidence, on 01234 841212, Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111 or text to 07786 200011.
