Water Worker Con Sparks Police Warning
BEDFORDSHIRE Police are warning villagers in Mid Beds to be on their guard against distraction burglars posing as water officials.
It follows an offence at 4pm on Monday (Nov 9) in High Street, Greenfield where a con artist called at the home of a woman in her 80s.
He said he was a water worker and needed to turn off her taps, but while he kept her talking downstairs an accomplice slipped upstairs and made off with a sum of money.
Safer Neighbourhood Sergeant, Lisa Johnson, said it’s possible the offenders were taking advantage of news about a programme water works in the Mid Beds villages that runs until November 20.
She wants to remind elderly people to always use a spyhole and chain and insist on seeing identification from callers. If in doubt, dial 999. Also remember to keep side gates and back doors locked.
She added: “Relatives and neighbours can help by keeping an eye on the elderly and reminding them that genuine officials will not mind providing identification if asked.”
Anyone with information about distraction burglars can contact police, in confidence, on 01234 841212, Crimestoppers, anonymously on 0800 555 111 or text to 07786 200011.
