Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Hate Incidents / Crime (Homophobic)
Victims of homophobic hate incidents / crime can feel very vulnerable and may be reluctant to report incidents / crimes which they perceive to be committed out of prejudice or hatred because of their sexual orientation.
This may be for various reasons, some of which may be fear of 'outing' to workmates and family, fear of repeat victimisation as well as lack of confidence in the police service.
Bedfordshire Police has a support network of specially trained Lesbian and Gay Liaison Officers (LAGLOs) to support victims and witnesses of homophobic hate incidents / crime. These will work alongside trained hate crime investigators to provide a sensitive and appropriate service.
They will also work closely with local neighbourhood police officers in communities which may be affected to rebuild confidence and enhance cohesion.
We need YOU to report all hate incidents / crime so that we may provide the best service to our public. No matter how trivial you think the incident is, if you perceive the motivation behind the incident to be your sexual orientation, please tell us about it. If you do not wish to speak to the police at this time you may contact Doug Ritchie - O'Dell and advocate Peter Hart who are both available for advice.
Doug Ritchie - O'Dell is the Coordinator of MEN4MEN.SHOP, tel 01582 511034.
